His Wings Ranch

Making Great Progress For the Kids

PhD Students Make the Difference

Huntington University Arizona brought their Doctorate of Occupational Therapy students to the ranch under the direction of Cambria Hunter. They shared new sensory integration ideas on how to exercise the kids’ vestibular and proprioceptive systems with our trampoline. They demonstrated an innovative attention span learning  techniques involving a two stage puzzle task taking place at the top and bottom of the slide. Junior used colored dots on steps to learn to compensate for his vision and depth perception challenges. There was even dough for Nolan’s sensory processing needs. All of their methods were tied together with onsite educational workshops.

Melinna's Quincineria!

Melinna had a bleak diagnosis after fighting for her life for years in the hospital as seen in this photo when she was 10 years old. Last Spring her situation once again grew dire which was when Sue and Johnny prayed for direction for her and decided to care for her at the ranch despite their already overwhelming responsibilities and Melinna’s need for 24/7 care.

After a year with Sue and Johnny at His Wings Ranch Melinna is now thriving. As she turned 15 she just celebrated her Quinceanera! Everyone got dressed up for the event including Melinna with her two outfits. Last spring Sue and Johnny offered to care for Melinna at their home after she spent years struggling in intensive care.
It was a very special day with so many people contributing to pull the event together. Brenda cooked spaghetti and made a salad, Emilia got the dress, Johnny made the donut wall, Zabny did her nails and Daniela prepared her horse to prepare for the event held in the youth room on site. Even  Jaciel put on his fancy red shirt to guide her horse.

Loma Linda Returns

Like a whirlwind 25 student nurses came down May 31 for a day of speech, OT and PT. Loma Linda has generously volunteered to come down twice in the past few months. Truly a blessing!
These two Loma Linda students aren’t giants. They are standing next to 2 month old Brooklyn who looks like a mini version of a full grown horse. This second photo show some perspective.

When mom “Saphire” is working as a therapy horse her daughter “Brooklyn” dutifully follows along while Canelo, the shepherd follows her. Quite a sight.

We were doubly blessed with the presence of Tina Ubanik’s group of volunteers from Utah who cooked dinner for the Loma Linda group and tackled some projects around the ranch.

Thank You From Eliam

Thank you to the generous supporters at Horizon church whose financial contribution is helping baby Eliam get the care he desperately needs. Here is Eliam’s story:

Sometimes a baby draws the short straw when it comes to physical health. Eliam is one such little boy. Born just a few months ago he was diagnosis with meningeal myelocele, commonly known as spina bifida. This is a spinal defect where part of the vertebral column does not form correctly and part of the spinal cord can be outside the body. This normally results in paralysis. But in Eliam’s case, he is able to move his legs and has sensation, which is a miracle.  He needs a surgery quickly, before he is 4 months old for the best result, to repair the vertebral defect to protect the cord and to prevent paralysis in the future.

The photo above is of Eliam’s parents Juan and Carla and his brother Carlos shorty after Eliam was born. Through insurance his parents have access to getting him the surgery, but to do so requires the additional rental of a monitoring system that will allow the surgeons to operate on successfully without damaging the spinal cord.  The cost of this system rental is $2,000. The parents have been struggling to get the money themselves through raffles and passing a can on the streets at the stop signs here in Ensenada.  They have been able to raise half of what they need.  This has been a race against time to have funds in place in advance of a surgery scheduled for July 15.  The family are believers and have been praying for the Lord to provide for this essential and time sensitive surgery so Eliam can walk and avoid the many severe health concerns we see in other kids with Spina Bifida.

Their prayers have been answered by the generosity of those at Horizon church who matched what funds they could raise with funds of their own. For this the family is forever grateful.  We will keep you posted on the results of the surgery in July.

Why do we do this ?

As a Christian organization we feel we’ve been called by Jesus to help the poor by building shelters, providing therapy and providing medical and family assistance. To further the work that He started nearly 2000 years ago it is our hope that all of those involved will feel the tangible love of Christ in both the giving and the receiving of the gifts shared.
