His Wings Ranch

Making Great Progress For the Kids

Ramping Up

His Wings’ blue community room (shown behind Kevin and Jay) gets a long awaited access ramp. Together Kevin, Jay, Grant and Michael came up with a creative solution to the existing problem which was that there were stairs off the front door.  This is where this group thought outside of the box. They swapped the stairs on the front for the steep ramp that was on the side. The result is a gradually sloped ramp thoughtfully located on the front of the building and the less often used stairs moved around to the back side of the building.

Of course they also had to take apart the ramp and the stairs bit by bit and pour new concrete footings for each.

Not only did they build a ramp to the community room portable but they also rebuilt the entire aging access ramp off the front of the special education building. From left to right: Michael Gillet, Grant Ruthenberg, Kevin Burgess, Jay Dickson and Steve Armendariz in the front.

Their work was pivotal because this ramp and deck are the only entrance to the special education building which serves kids in wheelchairs and those using braces. Now they have a well built deck that will outlast the harsh Baja sun.

Hippotherapists - Back in the Saddle

A half dozen horse therapy experts converged on His Wings Ranch for a week. The professional name for this is  Hippotherapy. It involves using the horse’s natural movement to help patients improve and does wonders for balance, core strength, posture, coordination, muscle control and even speech and communications skills.
Hippotherapy is a perfect fit for kids with conditions such as: Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis, Developmental delays and Neurological disorders. These are the precise challenges that kids at His Wings Ranch face.
Jessica Perkins an Occupational Therapist came all the way to His Wings from Lexington, Kentucky to share her expertise.
Above you’ll see short introductions from the instructors beginning with:
  • Carol Huegel – Physical Therapist from  Philidelphia
  • Lisa Harris – Physical Therapist from  Kentucky
  • Kelly Coney Pacious – Physical Therapist from North Carolina
  • Jessica Perkins – Occupational Therapist from Kentucky
  • Shannon Middleton – Speech Language Pathologist from Texas
  • and Linda Frease Occupational Therapist from Florida.

Loma Linda University Speech Therapy

Loma Linda University arrived with 6 speech therapy students, 6 occupational therapy students as well as 4 speech therapy supervisors and an occupational therapy supervisor.  We were blessed to have their help.

Alissa and Jodi articulate just how speech therapy works at the ranch and how they, as representatives of Loma Linda University, support and equip families to communicate with their kids. They also train teachers and staff on how best to work with kids needing help with speech and swallowing disorders.

Dr Brian Sharpe from Loma Linda has brought down multiple groups regularly providing consistent support for Sue at the Ranch.

Join Our Prayer Warriors

We had a meaningful first prayer warrior get together in June. Participants learned more about what’s happening behind the scenes at the ranch. We prayed for kids and families in the process of being healed.

We would love to have you join us for the next one. Marlena Sprague will be hosting remotely via Zoom. Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7th at 7 pm. (Pacific Time)

If you’re interested in finding out more or know you’d like to be included in her zoom invite. Just reply to this email and I will share your email with her.

Inspired by what we do?

You are invited to partner with us whether that be financially or by coming down to build and repair, or perhaps work with the horses or offer services to the kids. We always have a need for educators, therapists and medical providers. You can email Sue at the address in the footer of this page.
